Young Adult Sober Living in New York City

Early recovery is challenging for anyone, but for young adults, the stakes are uniquely high. The habits, relationships, and sense of identity formed during these years lay the groundwork for everything that follows. At Transcend NYC, our young adult sober living program is designed to meet young adults where they are: building the life skills, accountability, and community they need to move forward with confidence.

Located in a historic five-story brownstone on Manhattan's Upper West Side, our sober living house for young adults combines structured living, peer coaching, case management, and holistic wellness support to help residents develop the tools for lasting recovery and a genuinely independent future.

Why Young Adult Sober Living?

Young adults face a distinct set of challenges in early recovery. Many are navigating the transition to independence for the first time. They're learning how to manage finances, building their careers or completing their education, developing healthy relationships, and establishing routines, all while maintaining sobriety. Without the right support, that combination can feel overwhelming.

Sober living for young adults provides a structured, substance-free environment where residents can develop the essential life skills and coping skills needed for everyday life, with the guidance of peers and professionals who have been there themselves. Unlike traditional halfway houses, which focus primarily on housing and basic accountability, young adult sober living at Transcend NYC provides a full continuum of support, from peer coaching and case management to comprehensive wellness services and a thriving recovery community.

A Structured Environment Built for Growth

Structure is the foundation of successful early sobriety, and our young adult sober living program provides it without sacrificing independence or dignity. Residents live in a warm, upscale brownstone on a quiet Upper West Side street, surrounded by other young adults who are equally committed to personal growth and lasting recovery.

Daily life at Transcend NYC is designed to build confidence, responsibility, and routine. Residents participate in regular community events and activities, work one-on-one with peer coaches, and benefit from the accountability of living alongside others who understand the recovery journey from the inside.

Life Skills Development for Young Adults

One of the most important things sober living programs can offer young adults is preparation for independent living. At Transcend NYC, life skills development is woven into everything we do. Through peer coaching, case management, and our comprehensive wellness services, residents work on the practical and emotional skills that support a sustainable, independent future:

Executive Functioning and ADHD Coaching

Many young adults in recovery struggle with focus, organization, planning, and follow-through. Our coaches work with residents in real-world settings to build the executive functioning skills that support success in work, school, and daily life.

Financial Coaching

Learning to manage money responsibly is one of the most essential life skills for independent living. Our financial coaching helps residents build budgeting habits, understand their finances, and plan for a stable future.

Career and Academic Guidance

Whether a resident is finishing a degree, re-entering the workforce, or exploring a new direction, our team provides hands-on support for career development, academic planning, and professional goal setting.

Nutrition and Personal Training

Physical health is an essential part of the healing process. Our wellness services include nutrition planning and personal training, and every resident receives a membership to a local, upscale gym, making fitness a natural part of the recovery journey.

Peer Recovery Coaching

Each resident is matched with a peer coach who has lived experience in recovery and is uniquely suited to their background and goals. Coaching sessions range from 2 to 14 hours per week, supporting habit formation, coping strategies, and steady progress toward independence.

Community, Connection, and Peer Support

Young Male Sober Living: Why Age Matters - Transcend NYC

Isolation is one of the greatest risks in early recovery, especially for young adults who may feel disconnected from peers who are not in recovery. At Transcend NYC, sober living for young adults means being part of a genuine recovery community where residents support one another, build real friendships, and discover that a sober life can be engaging, fun, and full.

With four or more events and activities every week, from meditation and 12-step meetings to indoor skydiving, ski trips, horseback riding, rock climbing, and the best of what New York City has to offer, residents stay active, connected, and genuinely excited about their lives in recovery.

The alumni network at Transcend NYC, built over more than a decade and hundreds of program graduates, extends that community far beyond the residence itself. Many alumni return regularly for events, continue working with coaches, and serve as living proof that lasting recovery is possible. For young adults just beginning their recovery journey, that kind of peer support is invaluable.

Support for Co-Occurring Mental Health Challenges

Many young adults entering recovery are also navigating mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, and trauma. At Transcend NYC, we understand that substance use and mental health are often deeply connected, and our program is designed to support the whole person.

Our case managers work with residents and their families to assemble the right wraparound treatment team, coordinating with outside clinical services, therapists, and treatment providers to ensure that mental health needs are addressed alongside recovery goals. We do not exclude residents based on prescribed medications and are experienced in supporting clients with co-occurring conditions.

Whether a resident needs ongoing clinical support, connection to outpatient treatment, or simply a structured and nurturing environment where they can focus on healing, our team is here to help build the right plan.

Case Management and Family Support

sober living for young adults

At Transcend NYC, our case management team is involved from the start, helping residents and their families develop a strategic recovery plan, assemble the right treatment team, and navigate the full range of resources available to them.

For families, our program provides regular communication, professional guidance, and the reassurance that their loved one is living in a safe, substance-free environment with qualified staff and a committed peer community. Weekly communication with families and treatment teams is a standard part of our young adult sober living program, keeping everyone informed, aligned, and moving in the same direction.

Who Our Young Adult Sober Living Program Supports

Our sober living for young adults is designed for men in their late teens and twenties who are navigating early recovery and looking for structure, community, and support as they build toward independence.

Young Adults Stepping Down from Treatment

For young men completing a residential treatment center program or outpatient treatment, our structured sober living environment provides the continuity of support needed to successfully transition back to everyday life without returning to old patterns.

Young Adults Taking a First Step

Not every recovery journey begins with inpatient treatment. For young men who are ready to make a change but not yet ready to commit to intensive treatment, young adult sober living combined with peer coaching and outpatient programming can be a powerful and accessible starting point.

Young Adults Managing Co-Occurring Conditions

For young men navigating both substance use and mental health challenges, our case management team and clinical network ensure that both are addressed as part of a cohesive, personalized recovery plan.

LGBTQ+ Young Adults

Transcend NYC is a proud and welcoming safe space for LGBTQ+ residents. Our residential program accepts male-identifying and non-binary individuals who are comfortable in a predominantly male space. With LGBTQ+ staff and clients as part of our community, residents can focus on their recovery journey knowing they are supported, respected, and seen for who they are.

Families Seeking Support

Families of young adults in early recovery often feel uncertain, overwhelmed, and unsure how to help. Our admissions team is here to walk families through the process, answer questions, and help everyone make an informed decision about next steps. We welcome family involvement and maintain regular communication throughout the program.

My son was in desperate need of sober support before he moved into the Transcend NY house. Their program director, Ned, worked closely with him and helped him find therapists and encouraged him to go back to school to finish his degree. If you have a loved one in need of sober community and guidance, I highly recommend this program. It changed his entire outlook on life and how to move forward as a sober individual.

★★★★★

Transcend has become a second home for me. The people are some of my best friends, the house is a safe haven, and I often encounter the community in my day-to-day life, living independently on the UWS. I wouldn’t have received any of these gifts without the structured, tiered approach Transcend gave me for my recovery. I can’t speak highly enough of them. Forever grateful.

The staff at the house were very communicative with our family when working with my brother on his programming. Everyone was so supportive with him finding work and finishing his last few college courses. He felt prepared and ready when it was time to leave their program.

I had a close family member who was a resident at transcend recently. I cannot say enough great things about this recovery community. They gave my loved one the much needed support, structure, and community that was necessary during his early recovery. The staff was all super helpful and great at bonding with the residents. I really cannot say enough about this place, it saved his life and from what I've heard many of his housemates as well.

I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude and admiration for the exceptional care and support we received from Transcend. The whole staff was so willing to meet people where they are at in their life and build a plan from that point. My partner needed a lot of support when he first got to their program, and they made sure that he always felt his needs were met, and concerns were listened to. I am eternally grateful for the unwavering support we received at Transcends Recovery Community, and I wholeheartedly recommend their services to anyone seeking a path to recovery.

★★★★★

A family member found a home at Transcend when they were coming out of a very dark place and had nowhere else to go. It was just what they needed. The people who work there are sensitive, caring and responsive and there is a strong sense of community. Sobering up while dealing with an underlying mental disorder is super hard and they really get it.
